World Day of Prayer against Human Trafficking

“Human trafficking is an open wound on the body of contemporary society, a plague on the body of Christ. It is a crime against humanity.” Pope Francis.

“Journeying in Dignity” is the theme for this year’s World Day of Prayer and Reflection Against Human Trafficking. The event takes place every year on February 8, the day we celebrate the liturgical memory of St. Josephine Bakhita, the Sudanese nun who, as a child, had the dramatic experience of being kidnapped and enslaved and who became the universal symbol of the Church’s commitment against trafficking.

Trafficking involves exploiting, restricting personal freedom and exercising power over the victim through violence or threat of violence or punishment. Trafficking deprives people of their dignity, their ability to control their own lives, and their right to live safely and freely.

In the journey toward dignity, let us walk together and connect with the pain of the victims of human trafficking.
